Employment Law
Federal and state anti-employment discrimination laws prohibit discrimination in the workplace based on an employee's race, color, religion, age, gender, or disability.
We have handled major class action employment discrimination cases based on race and sex, in addition to handling individual cases of discrimination.
In one case, Mister v. Illinois Central Gulf Railroad, we obtained a $10 Million settlement for a class of African-American applicants for employment from East St. Louis, Illinois, who were wrongfully denied jobs with the railroad, prompting the U.S. district court judge to write:
"The Court concurs that the record herein demonstrates that Mr. Schlichter and his firm performed with the highest skill ... This Court is unaware of any comparable achievement of public good by a private lawyer in the face of such obstacles and enormous demand of resources and finances."
In another case, Wilfong v. Rent-a-Center, we obtained a $47 Million settlement in a nationwide class action employment discrimination case in which we represented women employees of Rent-a-Center. This case was one of the highest settlements ever obtained in an employment discrimination case for women in the United States.
Such class action cases require a tremendous investment of time and resources which few law firms possess. In the words of the Federal Judge writing about the efforts of the firm and the extraordinary result:
"I've never seen an effort like this put forth ... it's beyond an extraordinary effort, an amazing, amazing result."
