Just For Men® Chemical Burns Lawsuit Information
Just For Men is a line of permanent hair dye products marketed to men as a way to color gray hair. The product line also includes dyes sold specifically for beards, sideburns and moustaches. Men across the country have been reporting serious injuries requiring medical treatment after using Just For Men hair dye. These injuries, many of which are permanent, include:
- Facial Scarring
- Skin Blistering
- Severe Burning Pain on the Skin
- Skin depigmentation
- Swelling on the Face
- Weeping Sores on the Skin
- Skin Rash that Spreads Rapidly
- Severe Itching
- Anaphylactic shock
In some cases, these injuries occur immediately following use and in other cases the injuries develop several days later. The ingredients of Just for Men include a host of chemical solvents, such as hydrogen peroxide, ethoxydiglycol, ethanolamine and p-Phenylenediamine, also known as PPD. Manufacturers of Just for Men have omitted critical safety information regarding its use, including the high number of serious injuries reported in connection with using this product, as well as the health risks associated with PPD.
A study published in 2013 in the Dermatology Journal, Contact Dermatitis, involving 2,939 patients reported that 4.5 percent of patients had a positive reaction to PPD. Additionally, in 2006, PPD was named the "Contact Allergen of the Year" by the American Contact Dermatitis Society and according to a 2001 study performed by the Cleveland Clinic and published in the American Journal of Contact Dermatitis [http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11381342], African-American users of PPD experienced a higher sensitivity rate overall (men and women) of 10.6 percent versus 4.5 percent in Caucasians. The study further concluded that the sensitization rate of PPD in African-American men in particular was 21.2 percent compared to 4.2 percent in Caucasians.
Men who use the product repeatedly and over a period of months or years have also reported serious permanent injuries, such as facial scarring, skin depigmentation, and other injuries. Yet, Just For Men does not adequately warn men of the risk of permanent injury from cumulative use of the product.
